When a Pope dies or resigns, the Sistine Chapel becomes the stage for one of the most solemn rituals in the Catholic world — the Papal Conclave.

🔔 What is the Conclave?

Derived from the Latin cum clave ("with a key"), the term refers to the seclusion of the cardinals within the chapel until a new Pope is chosen.
No phones. No media. No outside contact. Only prayer, discussion, and the vote.

🗳️ The Process

  1. The Oath – Each cardinal swears an oath of secrecy before God.
  2. Voting – Ballots are written and placed in a chalice, then burned.
  3. The Smoke – Black smoke signals no decision; white smoke, a new Pope.
  4. “Habemus Papam” – The words resound from the balcony of St. Peter’s: “We have a Pope!”

During the conclave, even Michelangelo’s frescoes witness history unfold — The Last Judgment behind the altar reminding each cardinal of divine accountability.

“Beneath the eyes of eternity, the future of the Church is decided.”

The Sistine Chapel thus serves as more than an art sanctuary — it is the nerve center of spiritual succession, where faith, tradition, and history converge in whispered prayer.
